About Us
John Lothes, MA LPA, E.D. is a clinical psychologist that specalizes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & is a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician. In 2008, John helped start and continues to help run a DBT informed Partial Hospital Program, Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient and Mental Health Intensive Outpatient programs in Wilmington, NC. Dr. Lothes and colleagues have published research on DBT informed partial hospital programs and their efficacy on helping with treating depression, anxiety, hopelessness and suffering. John also has a private practice where he does traditional one on one therapy and runs outpatient DBT skills groups. John has also published research on the effects of aikido training on mindfulness. Mr. Lothes has traveled around the country where he taught and/or presented on DBT. Current research that Dr. Lothes are exploring is examining martial arts training on well-being, mindfulness and it's effects on college students and the effects of exercise on depression and anxiety in clinical populations and first responders. Dr. Lothes has also published research looking at the role that mindfulness may play in a clinical population and symptom reduction.

Current research focus for Dr. Lothes is on how wellness and physical activity intersect and how mindfulness plays a role in anxiety and test anxiety reduction.

John is faculty member at the University of Wilmington North Carolina and teaches in both the College of Health and Applied Human Sciences and the Psychology Department.

Mr. Lothes has been training in aikido for over 10 years and hold the rank of Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt). John is the founder and faculty adviser to the UNCW aikido club. John also has a Black Belt in Brazilian Jujitsu and continues to train in both arts.
One on One Training

John is available for individual training/sessions on mindfulness. He has worked with people to use mindfulness for anxiety, general relaxation, stress management and for competition anxiety for athletes.
Group or Team Training
John is also available for group mindfulness training to help teams work on stress management or competition anxiety.
